26.8.2022 | Finland has made significant progress on climate change adaptation in recent years, which is reflected in the legislation and strategies of different administrative branches. These strategic objectives should now be implemented more widely by increasing concrete measures both in individual sectors and at the regional and municipal levels. This is according to a new overall evaluation of progress on national climate change adaptation policy published on 26 August.

29.4.2020 | The Saami people observed the first signs of climate change in the 1960s and the changes have accelerated over the course of the 2000s, according to a study by the University of Oulu. The study examined how the Saami have adapted to climate change in reindeer husbandry and explored ways for the Saami to adapt to climate change in a culturally sustainable manner.

20.11.2020 | The economic costs of climate policy measures such as emission tax and their effects on income distribution can be regulated by redistributing emission tax revenue back to households. This is the outcome of a study conducted by the Pellervo Economic Research Institute PTT, Merit Economics, and Statistics and Research Åland ÅSUB. The means to do this include earned income tax and/or corporation tax concessions and direct support to households.

The Government-funded HIIPUVA project is strengthening the knowledge base in preparation for conditions in which climate tipping points may rapidly disrupt living conditions.

29.3.2021 | To halt the loss of biodiversity, both nature protection and nature management in commercial forests should be increased. This is the conclusion of a study published on 29 March, conducted by the Natural Resources Institute Finland, Metsähallitus, Pellervo Economic Research Institute, Finnish Wildlife Agency and Finnish Environment Institute. The study was commissioned by the Government.

28.2.2019 | Forest carbon sinks are in a key position in terms of the potential of the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector to promote the achievement of climate objectives in Finland. According to recent scenario calculations, by 2050 the forest carbon sink could as much as double from the present. Greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector could in turn be reduced by 30% by 2050 from the level in 1990, but this would require major changes to peatland cultivation.
