Nordic foreign and security policy cooperation under scrutiny
Interest in foreign and security policy cooperation between the Nordic countries has grown in recent years. Because of changes in the security situation in the Baltic Sea region especially after the Ukrainian crisis and the growing global insecurity, cooperation in foreign and security policy is even more important than ever before.
However, there are considerable differences between the Nordic countries concerning their security solutions, international linkages, priorities and level of commitment. These create dividing lines and restrictions to cooperation that may be hard to bridge.
These are the questions discussed in the report of the Finnish Institute for International Affairs ‘Nordic cooperation in foreign and security policy in a new security environment’. The report analyses the current state of the Nordic foreign and security policy cooperation and looks into the opportunities for and obstacles to deepening the cooperation from various perspectives. The report was written by Researchers Tuomas Iso-Markku and Eeva Innola and Director Teija Tiilikainen of the Finnish Institute for International Affairs.
The publication concludes the Institute’s research project ‘A Stronger North? – Developing Nordic cooperation on foreign and security policy’. The project was conducted as part of the implementation of the Government's analysis, assessment and research plan for 2017.
