15.2.2019 | The Finnish Environment Institute SYKE has studied how the recycling of municipal waste could be made more efficient in a way that suits the Finnish conditions. The study was based on the European Commission recommendations, according to which measures such as clarification of responsibilities for waste management and more cooperation among the operators is needed to raise the recycling rate in Finland. Reaching the recycling targets requires significant changes to the current system.

Finland was ranked third best in the assessment of sustainability in all UN Member States published in 2018, and Finland also has a strong reputation as a global leader in sustainable development work. Yet, we have a long way to go to achieve the 2030 Agenda goals.

To achieve this, the main thing for Finland to do is invest in a rapid reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in all emission sectors. Besides this, ways to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere are needed. Maintaining and strengthening forest carbon sinks have a key role in this. The collection and storage of carbon dioxide from the use of bioenergy may be one of the options for the future.

5.4.2023 | The regulatory framework of Finland's fiscal policy has faced several crises that have revealed its ineffectiveness in dealing with unexpected situations. The system should be reformed and its operating model clarified, finds a recent study conducted by the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy (ETLA) for the Government. According to the researchers, the budgetary framework should distinguish between the operating procedures for normal economic cycles and exceptional crises.

30.5.2022 | The misallocation of labour and capital in the Finnish business sector has increased in the 2000s, which has significantly retarded productivity growth. The concentration of labour to companies with lower productivity is a key factor in retarding growth. A more efficient allocation of labour could be influenced, for example, by dismantling incentive traps and increasing labour mobility and wage competition, states a recent study by Aalto University and ETLA Economic Research.
